 What We Believe

1.                  We believe in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as verbally inspired of God and inerrant in the original writing, and that they are of supreme and final authority in faith and life. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:19-21)

2.                  We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Exodus 20:2, 3; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 8:6)

3.                  We believe in God's direct creation of the universe, without the use of pre-existing material, and apart from any process of evolution whatever, according to the Genesis account. (Genesis 1:1-31; Exodus 20:11; Colossians 1:16, 17; Hebrews 11:3)

4.                  We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, and born of Mary, a virgin, and is true God and true man. (Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:35; Galatians 4:4)

5.                  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood. (Isaiah 53:4-11; Acts 13:38, 39; Romans 3:24, 25, 4:5, 5:1, 8, 9, 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:19-21)

6.                  We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His ascension into heaven, and in His present life there as High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 28:1-7; Acts 1:8-11; 1 Corinthians 15:4-9; Hebrews 4:14-16)

7.                  We believe that the Holy Spirit baptizes, seals, and indwells every believer at the moment of salvation and that the Holy Spirit empowers every believer for holy living. We believe that the Holy Spirit today bestows service gifts upon believers and that the sign gifts were restricted to the Apostolic period. (Ephesians 1:13, 4:11-12, 5:18; Romans 8:9, 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Hebrews 2:3, 4; 1 Corinthians 13:8-13; Ephesians 2:20)

8.                  We believe that man was created in the image of God, that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death but also that spiritual death which is separation from God, that all human beings are born with a sinful nature and are sinners in thought, word and deed. (Genesis 1:26, 27, 3:1-6; Romans 5:12, 19, 3:10-13; Titus 1:15, 16)

9.                  We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God. (John 1:12, 13, 3:3-16; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2: 8, 9)

10.              We believe in the "eternal security" of the believer, that it is impossible for one born into the family of God ever to be lost. (John 6:39, 49, 10:28, 29; Romans 8:35-39; Jude 1)

11.              We believe in the personal, premillenial, pretribulation and imminent return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, when the Church will be gathered together unto Him. (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-13)

12.              We believe in the literal fulfillment of the prophecies and promises of the Scriptures which, foretell and assure the future regeneration and restoration of Israel as a nation. (Genesis 13:14-17; Jeremiah 16:14, 15, 30:6-11; Romans 11)

13.              We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting punishment of the lost. (Matthew 25:31-46; Luke 16:19-31; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 21:1-8)

14.              We believe that a local New Testament Baptist church is an organized body of believers immersed upon a credible confession of faith in Jesus Christ, having two offices (pastor and deacon), congregational in polity, autonomous in nature, and banded together for work, worship, the observance of the ordinances and the worldwide proclamation of the gospel. We further believe in the church, which is Christ's body, the spiritual organism consisting of all born-again believers of the New Testament dispensation. (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:4, 42; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:22, 23; 1 Timothy 3; 1 Peter 5:1-3)

15.              We believe that the Scriptural ordinances of the church are baptism and the Lord's Supper and are to administered by the local church; that baptism, by immersion, should be administered to believers only as a symbol of their belief in the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and as a testimony to the world of that belief and of their death, burial and resurrection with Him; and that the Lord's Supper should be partaken of by baptized believers to show forth His death until He comes. (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:41-47, 8:26-39; 1 Corinthians 11:23-28; Colossians 2:12)

Each ministry of Good News Baptist Church must contribute to the mission of the church to make the kind of disciples describe above.

The Worship Service:

The purpose of the worship service is to lead disciples to worship God in spirit and in truth by:

·         Focusing the worshiper’s attention on God

·         Faithfully declaring God’s Word

·         Leading worshipers to respond to God in their spirit

The elements of the worship service should be conducted to direct the worshiper’s attention to God, not to draw attention to a performer, nor to entertain the flesh.

The Sunday School:

The purpose of the Sunday School ministry is to:

·         Provide age-appropriate instruction in the Word of God

·         Promote fellowship and develop relationships between class members

·         Conduct strategic outreach efforts

Small Groups:

Disciple-making small groups are the primary means of promoting spiritual growth in the lives of individuals.  The church will provide various kinds of small groups, each identified with a specific phase of discipleship, aimed at reaching specific spiritual-growth objectives, requiring a reasonable amount of accountability, and led by trained, qualified leaders.

Support Ministries:

Disciple-making is the work of the whole church.  It requires service ministries as well as teaching and training ministries.  Those who are gifted in the area of service ministries are valued equally with those who are gifted in the areas of teaching and leading.

Priority will be given to evangelizing those with whom church members have personal relationships.  Therefore the church will provide:

·         Training in personal evangelism

·         Special outreach events conducted on a regular basis by individual Sunday classes as part of their intentional outreach strategy

·         Special all-church outreach events

Will also engage in general outreach efforts (such as advertising, canvassing, etc.) from time-to-time.

The disciple-making efforts of Good News Baptist Church will extend beyond our local community through supporting financially and in prayer selected missionaries and mission agencies.  Such support will be given to those who are actively involved in developing the kind of disciples that are described in the above “Definition of a Disciple”.

The mission of making disciples requires the involvement of each member of the church in roles that are not identical, but complimentary.

The role of the pastor is:

  • To provide vision and direction for the overall ministry of the church based on the Word of God
  • To communicate that vision and direction to the church through his preaching and teaching of God’s Word
  • To train and equip the leaders of the church to make disciples
  • To model discipleship and disciple-making

The role of the deacons is:

  • To assist the pastor in overseeing the ministries of the church in such a way that the pastor is able to devote his time and efforts to the role outlined above
  • To model discipleship and disciple-making

The role of other ministry leaders is:

  • To utilize their God-given gifts and abilities in their area of ministry
  • To oversee their area of ministry in a way that is consistent with the doctrinal position and philosophy of ministry of the church
  • To be involved in on-going training where they will be supported and held accountable
  • To model discipleship and disciple-making

The role of all church members is:

  • To grow as disciples by taking advantage of discipleship opportunities available through the church
  • To be involved in making disciples by seeking to reach non-Christians with the gospel and to build up other believers
  • To serve the ministry of this church in the area in which he or she is gifted

In making disciples of Jesus Christ, we will rely upon the power of the Word of God, the working of the Holy Spirit, and prayer, in all of our ministries.  No amount of human skill, wisdom, or creativity can replace these resources.
